Bob Hollis appoints Mike Hollis as CEO of Oceanic, AERIS, LavaCore & Oceanpro.

For immediate release
January 8th, 2013'

Bob Hollis appoints Mike Hollis as CEO of Oceanic, AERIS, LavaCore & Oceanpro.

After more than 40 years of leadership in the SCUBA industry Bob Hollis has decided to step down as CEO of Oceanic, AERIS, LavaCore & Oceanpro but remain Chairman of the Board of AUP, the globe spanning empire he built from the ground up. Bob Hollis will cease oversight of the day-to-day operations and devote his time exclusively to product development and research moving forward. “It’s time for me to stop worrying about inventory and concentrate on doing what I love - creating great products. I know I don’t need to worry about the business because Mike has been unofficially doing it for years already”, said Bob about his decision.

President and Chief Operating Officer, Dan Emke stated “We respect Bob’s decision. He has been and continues to be an inspiration for me and everyone that knows him. He built AUP from a little light housing company in his dive shop into a multinational entity with five unique and strong brands. AUP stands alone among the competition and will remain there by following the course Bob has charted from the beginning - Innovation. We look forward to the leadership and experience that Mike brings to the table as he assumes the post of CEO. This is not a changing of the guard. It’s an acknowledgment of the next obvious step for this successful family run business. He’s a proven hands on leader with the ability to take AUP forward while maintaining effective oversight of the day-to-day details. I look forward to continuing our close working relationship.”

Mike Hollis stated “Given the team and the resources I have to work with here at AUP I feel fortunate to have this opportunity. My top priority is to continue AUP’s proud tradition of industry leadership and innovation. This is the legacy my father has left us all with here at AUP. I want to thank him for all that he has done and will continue to do for the industry and growth of this magnificent company. Looking forward, AUP’s brands are set to launch new products in 2013 and beyond that will further set us apart from the competition through the relentless pursuit of innovation and reliability we build into every product we make. As the dive industry recovers from the latest economic down turn so too will we grow stronger and expand our reach by maintaining our relationship with the dealers who keep this industry alive.”

Mike Hollis has been intimately involved in AUP from the beginning. As a young man he started out building strobes for his father’s fledgling underwater photography equipment company - Oceanic. He went on to become a certified commercial diver doing stints in the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico. He then headed back to the bay area to start Pelagic Pressure Systems, a manufacturer of underwater instrumentation for the dive industry. Since then Mike has been the driving force behind some of AUP’s most acclaimed products. Mike’s proudest personal contributions to the dive industry have been his work on the OC1, Datamask HUD (Heads up display mask) as well as the Veo line of gauges. Over the years his team’s products have won numerous awards in the diving industry and have helped AUP remain among the top players in the SCUBA industry.

___________________________________________________________________

AUP’s worldwide headquarters is in San Leandro, California in a 120,000 square foot building that houses one of the most innovative and technologically advanced life-support equipment manufacturing facilities in the world. AUP’s team of engineers, product designers, and manufacturing experts are dedicated to the philosophy of excellence. One distinguishing attribute that separates AUP from other manufacturers is the commitment to vertical integration. The vast majority of AUP products are designed, developed, manufactured, and tested in its own facilities. NO other dive company can make that statement.

The Oceanic OCS dive computer was recently named to ScubaLab Tests' "11 Hot Dive Computers" and is leading the industry in the number one spot!

"We live in a Golden Age of dive-computer technology. Over the past two decades, these machines have evolved into powerful data centers capable of monitoring virtually all aspects of our diving." - ScubaLab

Features such as the intuitive menu system and exceptional build quality helped impress the testing staff but the Dual Algorithm is what really set itself apart. ScubaLab went on to explain that "You can dive liberally or conservatively simply by picking the appropriate algorithm. In both you can further customize by using the Conservative Factor setting or adjusting the tissue loading bar-graph alarm."

Oceanic Leads the Way Showing Their True Colors With Launch of New USA Product Line

New Patriotic Themed Product Line Demonstrates Commitment to Supporting Veteran’s Programs Across our Country

Oceanic is pleased to present our USA product line, hitting the shelves this summer. This initiative has been in the planning stages for years and has finally come to fruition. Throughout the years Oceanic has supported the myriad of programs that engage our injured military personnel and introduce them to the sport of diving. This year it was time to launch our own signature program. With the funding made available from the sales of the USA product line, Oceanic hopes to reach and support many more of these veterans than previously possible.

The USA product line is attractively styled, appropriately in red, white, and blue. 7% of Oceanic’s sales from the USA line will be committed each year towards this program. We anticipate that this program should provide $250 to each of 300-350 qualified veterans. The $250 will be applied directly to the veterans gear purchases through our participating Oceanic Dealers Nationwide.

It’s a great feeling to know that you are giving back to those who gave so much; thanks to them we are able to enjoy the freedoms that we do. Isn’t it time to show your true colors? We know you will want to be diving in our patriotic product line this summer too.

Visit OceanicWorldwide.com to find a dealer near you.

DEMA 2011 Recap

American Underwater Products had yet another successful DEMA Show this year. In Orlando, Florida from November 2-5 we showcased walls filled with new and innovative products. Our booth was continuously buzzing with excited onlookers and Dealers. We also lined up back-to-back seminars throughout each day for attendees who got to see first-hand our new programs, products and services.

The American Underwater Products Booth at DEMA Show: Oceanic, AERIS, Hollis, Lavacore and OceanPro were all well represented at our booth. The booth was staffed by our Sales Representatives, International Distributors and Affiliates and company Management. With a constant flow of attendees and buyers going through the exhibit, AUP had easily one of the busiest booths at the show .

Technical Service Seminars at DEMA Show: We held 7 Technical Service Seminars and drew in over 200 participants for the second year in a row. The full Equipment Technician Seminars and the Updates were very popular for Oceanic, AERIS and Hollis. Several seminars were booked completely full.

Marketing & Sales Seminars at DEMA Show: We held 21 Sales and Marketing Seminars and drew in more than 350 attendees. We were especially happy to see so many Oceanic, AERIS and Hollis Dealers and distributors attend the Buyers Programs and Distributor Product Reviews. This type of presentation is the most efficient way to reach our Dealer and Distributor Base.

One of AUP’s newer brands, Lavacore, was hot as ever and people couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. We talked about Lavacore’s amazing thermal properties and comfort – either on its own or in addition to neoprene.

Doug Krause made understanding Dual Algorithm Technology a simple process. Attendees of the Dual Algorithm seminars are now clear on the advantages of our dual algorithm options in Oceanic and AERIS personal dive computers.

Alberto Mantovani was back by popular demand and went through the process of using the Oceanic and AERIS Computer simulations, online classes, mobile applications, and crash courses for open water training, rental promotions and after purchase support, designed by DiveNav.

Not just for cave divers anymore. Master Technical Diving Instructor Jeff Loflin introduced sidemount diving to a standing-room-only audience. Jeff probably has more bottom time on the Hollis SMS100 Sidemount Harness System then most people have total dive time and we were very fortunate to have him with us at the DEMA Show. Jeff has literally written the book on sidemount diving.

Freediving Champion Martin Stepanek introduced a remarkable and growing market to the audience. We learned about the beauty and appeal of Freediving and how this market segment can bring in new customers and spice up our bottom lines. Martin is the freeedivers’ freediver. A 13-time Freediving World Record Holder, Martin has been to 400 feet on a single breath of air and worked with AERIS to develop the F.10 and soon-to-be-released F.11 Freediving watches.

Success Outside of the DEMA Show: When you take into consideration the number of promotions and communications we did prior to the DEMA Show, you can better understand why DEMA Show 2011 was so successful for us. The Dealer Programs at our San Leandro Headquarters have continued to be hailed as a total success by our Dealers and HQ personnel. Our attention to our Dealers’ needs was demonstrated by the increase in Network communications via our web sites, press releases, this Newsletter and our new Facebook/Twitter pages. And most importantly, in spite of the amount of work we were engaged in and the hectic schedules we endured, our American Underwater Products Family drew much closer together. All in all, it has been a very good year.

Oceanic Introduces Redesigned Website

In 1993, Oceanic was one of the first SCUBA brands to launch a web site. In 1996, Oceanic introduced what was referred to as T3 – an innovative ecommerce strategy that directed product availability and pricing inquiries to local dealers. In 2004, Oceanic launched Total Access – a hosted ecommerce model which again directed consumers wishing to buy online to our authorized dealers. From the beginning, we have endeavored to leverage the power of the internet to educate, support, and ultimately sell our products – while allowing our dealers to be seamlessly included in every sale.

The new site offers direct to consumer ecommerce sales, providing access to the complete range of Oceanic products, while once again including the local Oceanic dealer in the process. While Oceanic processes payment and fulfills the order, the customer may select a free shipping option with in-store delivery, or should they choose home delivery, must select a Local Service Dealer. The associated dealer receives credit for the sale. Rather than randomly select the nearest dealer or require dealer bidding on the order, we believe that by allowing the consumer to choose, it encourages a relationship with that specific dealer. Order confirmations, order history, and annual service reminders for life-support products will always refer to the selected Local Service Dealer. Our goal is to provide the best of both worlds – the convenience of shopping online with all the benefits and services associated with buying in a local store.

In addition to a new modern design that is easy to navigate, the new site offers expanded product information including video, complete specs, ratings and reviews. Visitors also have the ability to easily search for specific items, locate a local dealer, check out the latest company news and promotions, and connect via Facebook and other social media sites. Customer service has been enhanced with an expanded support section and a searchable knowledgebase for frequently asked questions.

This initiative will reinforce Oceanic’s leadership in ecommerce within the diving industry by allowing Oceanic site visitors to easily find and purchase our products online with a range of delivery and order options, without losing connection with their local dealer.

Oceanic/AERIS donate gear to The Parker Manatee Aquarium

Oceanic and AERIS have both donated dive gear to the South Floria Museum for use in The Parker Manatee Aquarium. The staff are now utilizing Oceanic and AERIS boots, fins, suits and masks while handling and caring for the Manatees.

The aquarium, “designed to house three adult manatees, holds nearly 60,000 gallons of water, including a medication pool. The pool offers both deep and shallow water, allowing the manatees to maintain natural feeding behaviors. An exhibit area within the facility helps to educate the public about manatee anatomy and offers above and below water viewing. Manatee Care specialist provide presentations about manatee habitat, nutrition and physiology. Working closely with US Fish and Wildlife and critical care hospitals for manatees, the Parker Manatee Aquarium is a second stage rehabilitation facility. A second stage facility provides a temporary home for manatees that will be released back into the wild after having received treatment from an acute care hospital. The Aquarium has housed nineteen manatees as part of its rehab program. Parker Manatee Aquarium is the permanent home to Manatee County’s most famous resident and official mascot, ‘Snooty’, the manatee.”

The South Florida Museum also has a webcam with a live-feed into their tank available 8-5 daily on their website: http://www.southfloridamuseum.org/TheAquarium/SnootyCam.aspx

Aarin-Conrad Allen, biologist and dive operations manager at the South Florida Museum sent us some photographs depicting the manatees they have throughout the museum as part of manatee rescue/rehabilitation coinciding with the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species Management.

Read below to learn about the current research that is being done by the aquarium.

Rescue/Rehabilitation:

South Florida Museum is one of several different organizations of zoos and aquariums who participate in rescue and rehabilitation of endangered West Indian Manatees. The animals we obtain in captivity were rescued from the wild to recover from injury or illness (usually boat-strike injuries), and will be returned to the wild to contribute to the wild population. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service oversees all of the manatee rehab entities, as well as the release of each animal.

Nocturnal Behavior Study:

We are interested in discovering more of how the manatees behavior differs during night as opposed to during the day. Manatees lack a Pineal gland, a special mechanism in many mammals that controls circadian rhythm. (read more in attached document) (Principal Researcher: Aarin-Conrad Allen, Nova Southeastern University)

Manatee Chemosensory Research:

Within the last 30 years, we have learned the most of what we know about manatee chemosensory (sight, smell, touch, hearing, etc.). These studies were conducted using younger captive manatees. South Florida Museum is home to Snooty, the world’s oldest manatee (63 years old). We want to know how these senses might change as the manatees age, so we are using Snooty to voluntarily participate in research projects to determine differences. (Principal Researcher: Aarin-Conrad Allen, Nova Southeastern University)

Manatee Vocalization Research:

Manatees emit high pitched squeaks and chirps to communicate. Very high pitched, and short in duration, our tank contains a hydrophone (underwater microphone) to pick up vocalizations by our manatees. These vocalizations are then recorded and cataloged to give sum insight as to what these vocalizations play in the manatee’s realm. (Principal Researcher: Dr. Charles Grossman, Xavier University)

Oceanic Veo 1.0 Crash Course

Have you seen the VEO 1.0 Crash Course for open water students on www.divecomputertraining.com?

This is a much easier and more streamlined version of the course designed for rentals and open water students. This will make it easier and quicker for your instructors and staff to teach students how to use computers during their first scuba course or when renting them out to divers.

Do you carry the Oceanic Veo 1.0 in your rental gear? How much do you charge to rent it? How much time can you afford to spend with the rental customer to explain how to operate the Veo 1.0? Or you just say ….. press the button and look at the numbers?

Or, do you use the Veo 1.0 dive computer in your Open Water Classes? How do you train your students on how to use the Veo 1.0? Or you just say ….. press the button and look at the numbers?

Now you can do much better than that; use the Veo 1.0 Crash Course !

This crash course is fast paced and it should take only about 15 minutes to complete; it includes a brief introduction to dive computers, shows how to plan, execute and review a dive using the Veo 1.0 and covers the Veo 1.0 alarms.

Zach Bunnell Day of Discovery @ Monterey Bay Aquarium

On July 31st and for the ninth year in a row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium gave young people with disabilities an opportunity to experience the freedom of being in the ocean when it hosted them for a 90-minute surface SCUBA experience through its Underwater Explorers program. This year’s program was sponsored by a generous grant from Salinas Valley Memorial’s Children’s Miracle Network.

George Peterson, the Senior Diving Safety Officer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium tells us that “[they] have been purchasing some of the gear from Oceanic since the program’s inception and it has certainly served us well! We love the pint-sized BCD’s and the Explorers Regs are awesome! Jesus always does a great job for us.”

This years Day of Discovery was another success and “next year we’ll most likely purchase more gear from Oceanic as we may try to expand the program and add a family component” says Peterson.

24 young people with varying disabilities put on modified SCUBA gear and with the aid of the aquarium’s certified dive staff, encountered sea creatures as they explored the aquarium’s Great Tide Pool.

All participants were between 8 and 14 years old and some are confined to wheelchairs. The non-profit aquarium provided free access to the program and all exhibits for the young people and their families.

The magical day was in honor of 10- year old Zach Bunnell, who fulfilled a year-long wish to participate in Underwater Explorers in 2004, despite fighting brain cancer that left him blind. Bunnell passed away a few months after fulfilling his dream, but his gentle and witty spirit inspired several aquarium staff to offer this unique experience to other special needs children.

The aquarium developed the Underwater Explorers SCUBA program in 2002. It was warmly embraced by participants and was made a permanent summer program in 2003 to give children ages 8 to 13 an opportunity to have a similar SCUBA experience in the Great Tide Pool. This year’s Underwater Explorers program debuted on June 18 and is running four times daily through Labor Day.

Oceanic App Now Available!

30-40 simulated video clips serve as a mobile manual on steroids. Detailed tutorials for twelve popular Oceanic dive computers are now available at your fingertips.

The growth of mobile phone applications has come to the scuba diving industry in a big way. Oceanic Worldwide has announced a new iPhone application that provides instant details, graphics and explanations for twelve of the company’s popular scuba diving computers. The App, developed in conjunction with DiveNav, Inc. gives you instant mobile access to convenient and easy to understand tutorials for almost every Oceanic dive computer.

According to Doug Krause, Oceanic Worldwide’s Marketing Manager, the new App provides a simple and easy way for divers to learn how their computers function through an interactive display that includes live-action video. “Many of the simulator and demonstration pieces that divers see in a dive store are incomplete – they don’t show the customer how a computer will function and display underwater and at depth. This new App is unique because it lets divers learn about their Oceanic computers anytime using their mobile devices. We’re pleased to once again be leaders in technology that benefits the recreational scuba diving industry.”

Krause explains that the App, which is available at the iTunes store, provides direct links to a series of brief instructional videos designed to help users learn more about their dive computers and see how the displays work. Simple tasks like setting a computer for a different Nitrox mixture, changing the alarms or just seeing how the display looks at depth are all advantages of the new Oceanic App.

NOAA Lead Instructor gives Oceanic DATAMASK Thumbs Up

In May of 2011 I received a box from Oceanic. I had asked for the opportunity to test dive the new Oceanic DATAMASK. I thought the mask had a simple display that showed cylinder pressure, and while this heads up display (HUD) in itself would have been a major accomplishment, I had vastly underestimated the experience I was about to have.

I first opened the box and removed the mask for examination. The mask strap was heavy duty; it was about twice as thick as what I usually expect in a mask strap and very comfortable. The mask buckles were metal. The mask frame was thicker than any other masks I had seen before and the double face seal was wide and comfortable. This was a heavy duty military grade piece of diving equipment. There are two buttons, one on the top right of the frame and the second on the right side of the frame. Just from the standpoint of a mask it was an outstanding piece of diving equipment.

Looking through the other items in the box I found a computer cable and a CD, the hose-less pressure transducer, and an instruction manual. As I began to read the instruction manual I discovered this was far more than I had originally thought. This was a hose-less, air integrated, Nitrox programmable dive computer integrated into a mask. It displays appropriate amounts of information continuously to the diver in a well thought out common sense display. This information can be read at any time by looking down and to the right. The primary display shows what divers are most concerned about. Across the top I see my depth. The next line down is cylinder pressure. The bottom shows no decompression time or gas time remaining, whichever is your limiting factor. Yes, the mask also does decompression diving calculations. To the left I see tissue saturation in the bar graph display. I push the top button one time and screen 2 shows time of day and water temperature. If you want to turn the display off push the button on the right side of the frame.

As a diver, having this information in my mask made it impossible to not know my cylinder pressure, depth or bottom time remaining. In zero visibility or in absolute darkness I have all essential information available and complete use of both hands. The two adjustable audible gas pressure alarms, one turn around pressure and one adjustable low air alarm seem that it would be impossible to unknowingly run out of air. During my assent at the end of my second dive of the day, the mask asked me to make a safety stop. I had no idea this was going to happen. The mask seemed more like a dive buddy at this point.

As an instructor I found this to be an amazing tool. Most of our open water checkout dives are done in murky water. As an example, when working with students practicing buddy breathing, an instructor should be holding onto the diver that is simulating out of air. For me this means I am on the student’s right shoulder, my left hand holding their first stage and my right hand holding their second stage just off to the right of their mask. Being able to hold onto a student properly, glance to my lower right to see where we are in the water column during the entire accent made incredible sense to me.

The information and dive profiles are downloadable. Although the mask is programmable using a laptop computer, I was able to program the mask using only the two buttons on the mask.

There are virtual dives and instructional videos at www.OceanicUSA.com. Definitely worth viewing.

Oceanic VT4.0 Review on ScubaGearReports.com

The ScubaGearReports.com team recently had a chance to get their hands on the new Oceanic VT4.0 dive computer. After coming out strong in several other recent reviews, the VT4.0 had a lot to live up to and it did so with ease.

The SGR team noted that "the nice-sized display screen on the VT4.0 has allowed Oceanic to include a very intuitive on-board menu system, which we see as the core strength of this dive computer". The extreme ease of use has been a constant improvement noticed by many reviewers and SGR goes on to praise the VT4.0: "It’s by far the easiest wrist-mount computer we’ve used; the data presentation is outstanding, and the use of words instead of symbols (i.e. “Safety Stop,” “Deep Stop,” “Change Battery,” etc.) as well as menu prompts and bar graphs transforms a complex piece of equipment into an Everyman’s dive computer".

MacDive Updated for Oceanic's Atom 3.0 and VT4.0

MacDive is now available for two new Oceanic dive computers!

Mac users can now relive their dives using MacDive with Oceanic’s latest dive computer models.

Oceanic’s Atom 3.0 and VT 4.0 have just hit the shelves and MacDive has upgraded its software for users of the new models. MacDive is also available for a wide range of other Oceanic models.

MacDive creator, Nick Shore, says the product means divers can track their scuba diving life. “Divers can download their dive profiles to their Mac and log them. They can track their certifications as well as a history of their gear which means they will know when servicing is required.”

He says a recent feature that allows diver to sync to their iPhone has been very popular.
“But some of the most positive feedback has been for a photo support feature which automatically matched photos taken to your diving log. It’s like reliving the dive.”
Nick, who is a keen diver himself, also rates the Google map support allows divers to map their dives.

“I’ve set out to include features that enhance the experience and are intuitive to use,” he says.

With the addition of the Atom 3.0 and VT4.0 MacDive now supports a total of 25 dive computers between Oceanic and Aeris. It has been great working with MacDive and we are happy to provide a Mac option to our customers.

AUP Provides Support to the California Academy of Sciences

Photo: This sign displays next to the Academy's dive locker.

Bob Hollis has worked with and supported the California Academy of Sciences since before the inception of Oceanic. A few weeks ago we caught up with Elliott Jessup, the Diving Safety Officer over at the California Academy of Sciences/Steinhart Aquarium. Elliott manages all aspects of the diving program, with responsibilities such as running science dive classes, maintenance of the aquarium and dive locker, and supervising volunteer divers. We talked about the contributions that AUP has made to the Academy, how the equipment is being utilized, recent projects, and future endeavors.

The relationship between AUP and the Steinhart Aquarium grew through the friendship of Bob Hollis and Dr. John McCosker, Senior Scientist and Chair, Department of Aquatic Biology. When the new academy was being built, Bob was passionate about sponsoring the dive program in order to push forward the efforts of scientific discovery and education. A generous equipment donation was made which provided the Academy with everything needed to support the needs for on and off-site diving.

Photo: Oceanic regulators hang inside the dive locker.

Photo: Diving Safety Officer, Elliott Jessup, gives a tour of the dive locker and shows off some of the gear.

Oceanic and Hollis gear are both used at the Academy for a wide array of duties. The gear is used in-house for exhibit maintenance and public program dive shows, while out in the field the equipment is used for research and scientific collections for the Academy.

Photo: A volunteer diver cleans one of the tanks to prepare for an afternoon dive show.

The most recent project that the Academy has been working on was an expedition to the Philippines. This recent expedition is the largest that the Academy has ever pursued, both from a diving and terrestrial standpoint. There were over 30 researchers from the Academy as well as members of the aquarium and education outreach. In the Academy's official press release it is stated that "they encountered more than 300 species that appear to be new to science", and although that is an unofficial number, "over the next few months, the expedition scientists will be hard at work analyzing the specimens they collected during their field work—and undoubtedly discovering more new species along the way." One thing that made these finds possible is the fact that the California Academy of Sciences is the only institution in the United States that is allowed to collect in the Philippines. The expedition helped research but all was beneficial in expanding the Academy's living collection.

The Academy's dive program is growing both in-house and in the field for research. A new curator has recently been hired who has plans for deep reef research where they will be diving at depths of 200-400 feet and expecting to discover many new species. The diving for some of the upcoming projects will be rated much past a recreational level and "we need gear that reliable, that we can depend on, and that's going to work at 300 ft.", which is why Elliott is excited about continuing to take advantage of the Hollis dive gear.

The Academy is planning on expanding their volunteer dive program, moving from nearly 20 divers to around 100, and with hopes of eventually getting the volunteer divers out into the field doing research. The dive program is growing rapidly and if you are interested in becoming a part of it or have any questions you can contact Elliott.

The SGR staff were accompanied by about 40 other divers where they tested out the new BUD on multiple dives all day. SGR reported that “almost every diver who went down with a BUD clipped to a D-ring surfaced saying the DC was easy to read and easy to use. Some used the BUD to compare the NDL calculations of their own dive computers, and many commented on the automatic Safety Stop feature.”.
